Aysehan Julide Etem

BIOGRAPHY

Aysehan Julide Etem  is originally from  Elâzığ, Turkey. She completed her high school studies at Galileo Galilei Italian High School in Istanbul  where she grew up.  Afterward, she continued her studies at Liceo Ginnasio Statale di Siotto in Cagliari, Sardinia with the Rotary Club exchange program.

Julide first came to the States to study art at Harvard University, where she worked with Toshi Katayama who published her graphic design work in his book, Prof. Toshi Katayama's Graphic Design Class at Harvard University, in 2009.

Julide received her B.A. in Italian and Studio Art, concentrating on cinematography at the University of Virginia in 2010. In her senior art show entitled Constructed Lens, Julide showed two conceptual short films focusing on young people and their melancholy.

During her time at UVA, Julide spent a summer in Pistoia, Italy and worked at the Gori Collection, focusing on site-specific art. This rewarding experience motivated her to write her undergraduate thesis about site-specific art in Italy. She also taught a class on contemporary art in Italy through the University's Cavalier Education program.

Julide continued her studies as a master's student in Italian Studies at Jefforson's university. She focused on the concept of "melancholy" in Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa's famous novel, Il Gattopardo, and its cinematographic adaptation by Luchino Visconti for her master's thesis.

In 2011, the prestigious Virginia Film Festival premiered Julide's first short documentary film, Trolley, which portraits Charlottesville’s titular public transportation service ferrying both students and townspeople between U.Va.'s grounds and downtown Charlottesville. Julide conceptualized the trolley as the transit service "lays bare the segregation and alienation that is inherent to any modern urban area.

After she completed her M.A. at UVA, she moved to Indiana to work on her Ph.D. in Italian Studies. She is currently teaching at Indiana University, Bloomington.
